Older automation could move a file or copy a field, but it could not understand a document that was laid out differently every time. That is the part that changed. A tool can now read an order whether it arrives as an email, a PDF, or a portal export, and find the same information in each.

What is intelligent document automation?

How is this different from OCR or a scanner?
OCR turns an image into text. It does not understand what the text means or what to do with it. A tool with AI can tell which number is the total, which line is the rebate term, and what should happen next, then hand anything uncertain to a person.
